STRATEGIES TO TACKLE THE READING QUESTIONS
- i. Three answer options, True, False and Not Stated
- ii. Focus on factual information
- iii. Tests understanding of the facts presented, or what the writer believes/his opinions
What should you do ?
- i. Skim and scan the text and stimulus until you come to the information where the writer dicusses the issue/topic presented in the question
- ii. If the information is not found, the answer is ‘Not Stated’. Check this carefully
- iii. If you find some information, decide whether the writer’s view/opinion is the same as or contradicts what is given in the question
- iv. If the information is ‘true’ – the statement agrees with the writer’s opinion
- v. If the information is ‘false’ – the statement contradicts the writer’s opinion
- vi. If the information is ‘not stated’ – there is no information given on the issue discussed
MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTION (OPTIONS A,B AND C/A,B,C AND D)
- i. These questions focus on main ideas,details,vocabulary or the writer’s opinion
- ii. The questions follow the order of information in the text which may cover a section, a paraghraph or the whole text
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
- i. Underline the key words in the question. Use them to locate the information in the text
- ii. Skim through the text until you come to the part or section needed to answer the question
- iii. Check each possible answer option given carefully
- iv. Remember some of the most likely answer may be paraphrased
- v. Some of the vocabulary given in the options is found in the text. Only one of the options is the most suitable response to the question
